Active Shooter at Maryland Plant Leaves 3 Dead, 1 Critically Injured
At 2:30 pm on June 9, 2022, the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Maryland received reports that there was an active shooter at the Columbia Machine factory in Smithsburg. When deputies arrived, they found one employee outside who was critically injured. Three additional employees were located inside the manufacturing plant, all of whom were deceased.
The suspect had already fled the scene, but the Maryland State Police found him about five miles away. Upon trying to stop the suspect's vehicle, shots were exchanged, causing injuries to both the suspect and a state trooper.
The trooper received care for his injuries and was released. As of the morning of June 10, 2022, the injured employee remained hospitalized with critical injuries. The motive of this active shooting remains unknown.
Where Do We Go from Here?
With an estimated 250+ mass shootings already this year, many are asking where we go from here. Regardless of where you stand on gun rights issues, one thing is clear-we all need to learn how to protect ourselves in active shooter incidents.
Even the most responsive police force can be too far away to stop an active shooter before they can inflict mass casualties. This puts the onus on each of us to learn how to respond in active shooter incidents so we can give ourselves and those around us the best chance of survival possible.
If you're ready to take action, A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Survival Training teaches the five steps to take if you are ever in or around an active shooter incident. Courses are offered in-person and online, giving you the ability to learn these life-saving steps in a way that works best for you.
In addition to learning how to respond to an active shooter, participants in the A.L.I.V.E. training program also gain insight into how to develop a survival mindset. This is a mindset in which you are committed to emerging on the other side of the active shooter incident safely and securely so you are able to return home to your family and friends once again.
You can learn more about A.L.I.V.E.'s Maryland active shooter training courses here. Sign up for yourself, schedule a training session for your entire staff, or create a group training for your family and friends. Hopefully, this is one training you never need to use. But if you do, you'll be grateful that you had it.
