"Michael Julian has written an excellent book. Practical, detailed, and a potential life saver if you find yourself in the midst of a targeted attack."

What is the A.L.I.V.E. Method?
In a world where emergencies and threats can arise unexpectedly, having a structured approach to survival can make all the difference. The A.L.I.V.E. Method is a proven system designed to help individuals respond effectively in dangerous situations, particularly active shooter events. This method provides clear, actionable steps to maximize survival and ensure safety. Let's break down each step in detail.
A - Assess
The first step in the A.L.I.V.E. Method is to assess the situation. Awareness is key to survival. Take a moment to analyze what is happening around you. Ask yourself:
- Where is the threat coming from?
- How far away is it?
- Are there potential escape routes?
- What objects or barriers can provide cover?
Staying calm and quickly assessing the situation allows you to make informed decisions rather than reacting out of fear.
L - Leave
If a safe escape route is available, your best option is to leave immediately. Evacuating the area reduces the risk of harm. When leaving, remember:
- Move quickly but cautiously.
- Avoid drawing attention to yourself.
- Encourage others to leave, but do not delay if they hesitate.
- Keep your hands visible to law enforcement when exiting.
Leaving at the earliest possible moment is often the most effective way to survive a dangerous encounter.
I - Impede
If escaping is not an option, the next step is to impede the attacker's progress. This can be done by:
- Barricading doors with heavy furniture.
- Turning off lights and remaining silent.
- Using improvised weapons if necessary.
- Creating obstacles that slow the attacker down.
The goal is to buy time and reduce the attacker's ability to cause harm while awaiting law enforcement intervention.
V - Violence
As a last resort, if you are directly confronted and there are no other options, violence may be necessary to defend yourself. This step involves:
- Using any available objects as weapons.
- Targeting vulnerable areas such as the eyes, throat, or groin.
- Acting aggressively and with full force.
- Working with others to overwhelm the attacker.
Fighting back should only be considered if your life is in immediate danger and escape or barricading is not possible.
E - Expose
Once the immediate threat is neutralized or law enforcement arrives, it is crucial to expose yourself carefully. Follow these guidelines:
- Keep your hands visible to show you are not a threat.
- Follow law enforcement instructions precisely.
- Provide helpful details about the attacker if possible.
- Check for injuries and assist others if you can.
This step ensures a safe transition from the crisis situation to receiving proper aid and support.
The A.L.I.V.E. Method equips individuals with a clear, structured approach to handling life-threatening situations. By following these five steps-Assess, Leave, Impede, Violence, and Expose-you increase your chances of survival and help those around you stay safe.
Being prepared can save lives. If you want to learn more about the A.L.I.V.E. Method and how to implement it effectively, consider attending a training session or workshop. Your safety is worth the investment. Stay aware, stay prepared, and stay A.L.I.V.E.
Hear From An A.L.I.V.E. Student Survivor Of The Las Vegas Massacre
"As a retired 32 year law enforcement veteran, with several years of SWAT and tactical experience, I learned some different unique perspectives as it pertains to civilians dealing with active threat situations. Very good class for civilians who may have never experienced reacting to a life and death stressful situation."
