Spotting the Signs: How to Recognize a Potential Active Shooter Threat
In today’s world, the ability to recognize the early warning signs of a potential active shooter threat can save lives. Most attackers don’t “just snap”—they often display observable behaviors leading up to an act of violence. By staying alert and educated, you can help prevent tragedy before it strikes.
Here are several key indicators to watch for and act upon:
1. Leakage of Violent Intentions
One of the most common red flags is “leakage”—when a person hints at or directly expresses their intent to harm others. This could come in the form of:
- Threatening social media posts
- Disturbing drawings or writings
- Comments to coworkers, classmates, or friends
Take any mention of violence seriously. If something feels off, it likely is.
2. Sudden Behavioral Changes
Someone planning an attack may begin to withdraw socially, abandon responsibilities, or act unusually agitated. Watch for:
- Extreme mood swings
- A newfound obsession with firearms or past shootings
- Increased paranoia or feelings of persecution
3. History of Grievances or Fixation
Many attackers fixate on a particular person, group, or perceived injustice. If someone constantly brings up a grudge or expresses a desire for revenge, it’s a signal worth reporting.
4. Fascination with Weapons or Tactical Gear
While lawful gun ownership is not itself a red flag, someone who suddenly becomes consumed with weapons, tactical clothing, or rehearsing “missions” could be a cause for concern of a potential active shooter threat—especially when paired with other troubling signs.
5. Verbal or Written Threats
Even vague threats should never be ignored. Whether it’s a comment made in frustration or a cryptic message left behind, these statements can indicate a person is moving from thought to action.
6. Unusual Interest in Security Protocols
If someone asks detailed questions about building access, surveillance blind spots, or emergency exits—particularly if they have no reason to—consider this suspicious and worthy of closer attention.
What You Should Do WITH A POTENTIAL ACTIVE SHOOTER THREAT
If you see something, say something. Report suspicious behaviors to your local authorities, school administrators, HR departments, or security personnel. Trust your instincts—reporting is not about accusing, it’s about preventing.
And most importantly, empower yourself through training. The ALIVE Active Shooter Survival Program teaches how to recognize threats, respond decisively, and increase your chances of surviving a violent encounter.
