"Michael Julian has written an excellent book. Practical, detailed, and a potential life saver if you find yourself in the midst of a targeted attack."

Why Active Shooter Training Is Essential for Schools and Universities
The safety of students, faculty, and staff is a top priority for every educational institution—but today’s world demands more than fire drills and lockdown procedures. Active shooter incidents have increased dramatically over the past decade, and schools and universities are among the most frequently targeted locations.
At A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Survival Training, we believe that education and preparation are the keys to saving lives. Our program gives students and staff the skills they need to respond effectively when every second counts.
The Rising Threat in Educational Settings
According to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, school shootings have reached record highs in recent years, with dozens of incidents reported annually across the U.S. Universities and college campuses—where security is often more open and spread across larger areas—are particularly vulnerable.
The impact goes beyond the immediate event:
-
Emotional trauma for survivors and families
-
Disrupted learning environments and campus operations
-
Long-term mental health effects for students, staff, and communities
Preparation is no longer optional—it is a duty of care.
Why Traditional Lockdown Drills Aren’t Enough
Most schools practice basic lockdown drills, but real-world events rarely follow a single script. Active shooter situations are unpredictable, and students need more than “hide and hope.”
A.L.I.V.E. training teaches a proven, step-by-step method to assess the threat and take action:
-
A – Assess: Stay alert and quickly understand the situation
-
L – Leave: Escape when safe and guide others to exits
-
I – Impede: Barricade doors and create barriers when escape isn’t possible
-
V – Violence: As a last resort, fight back with commitment and coordination
-
E – Expose: Safely communicate with responders when danger has passed
Benefits for Schools and Universities
Implementing active shooter training builds confidence and resilience across campuses:
-
Prepared Students & Staff: Knowing exactly what to do reduces panic
-
Faster Response: Early action can stop or slow attackers, saving lives
-
Compliance & Liability Protection: Shows a proactive commitment to student safety
-
Community Trust: Parents and stakeholders see that safety is a priority
Make Preparedness Part of the Curriculum
Safety education should be just as common as fire safety or first aid. When schools and universities take proactive steps to prepare, they empower students and staff to act with clarity under extreme stress.
At A.L.I.V.E., we customize training to be age-appropriate, practical, and empowering—turning fear into actionable knowledge.

"As a retired 32 year law enforcement veteran, with several years of SWAT and tactical experience, I learned some different unique perspectives as it pertains to civilians dealing with active threat situations. Very good class for civilians who may have never experienced reacting to a life and death stressful situation."
