Because We Both Have One Priority: Saving Lives
Healthcare professionals are in the business of saving lives. Lives that, for some reason, became compromised outside of the office or hospital walls. Yet, sometimes the lives that need to be saved are those within the healthcare facility, as is the case with active shooter events.
Active Shooter Events in Healthcare Settings
According to a study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, in one 11-year timeframe (from 2000 to 2011), there were 154 hospital-related shootings across 40 different states. Of these events, 41 percent occurred on hospital grounds and the 59 percent took place within the healthcare facility, ultimately leaving 235 innocent victims either dead or injured.
Data provided by the FBI adds that, since 2011 and up to 2018, there have been 8 additional active shooter incidents in healthcare facilities across the nation. Together, these have led to 12 more deaths and 23 more people who suffered some level of injury. As if this weren’t bad enough, active shooter events in healthcare present some unique challenges.
Unique Challenges in Healthcare Active Shooter Planning and Response
Another piece of research, this one published on January 28, 2019, shares that active shooter planning and response typically offers some rather unique challenges when these events occur in healthcare settings.
Among these challenges are the high number of people who frequent these healing institutions daily, active shooters having access to multiple entries and exits, and that these types of events typically begin and end before law enforcement can even arrive on the scene.
Because of these challenges, this set of researchers indicate that “all healthcare facilities must prepare to limit damage and death.” One way to do this is to engage in active shooter survival training on a regular basis, ensuring that all staff members know exactly how to respond should an active shooter suddenly appear.
ALIVE Active Shooter Survival Training Program for Healthcare Professionals
ALIVE Active Shooter Survival Training provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to active shooter scenarios, taking into consideration all the unique challenges that tend to exist in these types of settings.
ALIVE stands for Assess, Leave, Impede, Violence, Expose. When these five steps are taken in response to active shooter events, when all the healthcare employees understand what these steps are, as well as how to best take them, this increases the likelihood of a more successful resolution. A resolution that can ultimately save lives.
